Things to Do in JB (Johor Bahru) 2026: Food, Malls, LEGOLAND & Day Trip Guide
The favourable exchange rate has turned JB into Singapore's unofficial weekend playground — meals, massages, groceries and family attractions all cost meaningfully less than at home. But a good JB trip is all about planning: cross at the wrong hour and you'll spend half the day in a jam. Here's the practical, updated-for-2026 guide — how to get across, what's actually worth your time, and how to stretch every ringgit.
TL;DR
Cross on a weekday morning (bus, KTM shuttle, or drive), eat the famous banana cake and Johor laksa, hit one or two malls (Mid Valley Southkey or KSL, not five), book attraction tickets like LEGOLAND online in advance for better prices, and get a massage before heading home after the evening jam clears. Pay in MYR, never SGD.
Getting to JB from Singapore
Four options, in rough order of popularity.
Cross-border bus (Causeway Link & public operators)
KTM Shuttle Tebrau (train, ~5 minutes across)
Driving (Causeway or Tuas Second Link)
Private car / day tour
Theme Parks & Attractions
Book tickets online before you go — advance online prices for major attractions are usually better than walk-up rates, and you skip the ticket queue.
LEGOLAND Malaysia Resort (Iskandar Puteri)
Desaru Coast (adventure water park & beaches)
Indoor family attractions & kids' playgrounds
Heritage & culture (old town Jalan Tan Hiok Nee)
What to Eat in JB
The food is half the reason to cross. These are established JB institutions — expect queues on weekends.
- Hiap Joo Bakery's banana cake — the century-old, wood-fired bakery near the old town. The banana cake sells out; go early and expect a queue.
- Laksa Johor — Johor's unique spaghetti-noodle laksa with a rich fish gravy; a genuinely different dish from anything in Singapore.
- Kacang pool — JB's beloved Middle-Eastern-influenced fava bean dish with toast and a runny egg, a classic at Larkin-area stalls.
- Kway teow kia, bak kut teh and seafood — old-town kway teow soup stalls, herbal bak kut teh, and seafood villages on the coast where the bill for a family spread costs far less than an equivalent meal at home.
- Cafe-hopping — JB's specialty-coffee scene (old town and Mount Austin especially) has exploded, with Singapore-standard brunches at Malaysia prices.
Malls & Shopping
Pick one or two per trip — they are enormous and spread out.
Mid Valley Southkey
KSL City Mall
City Square JB
Johor Premium Outlets (JPO)
Massage, Grooming & Wellness
The single biggest per-dollar saving category in JB.
Full-body massages, foot reflexology, facials, manicures, haircuts and even dental cleaning routinely cost a fraction of Singapore prices — which is why entire floors of KSL and Mount Austin are dedicated to them. Walk-ins are usually fine on weekdays; on weekends, popular outlets take WhatsApp bookings. A massage at the end of the day is the classic move — it lets the evening Causeway jam clear while you relax.

Money Tips for JB
How to keep the exchange-rate advantage you crossed for.
- Always pay in MYR. If a card terminal offers to charge you in SGD (dynamic currency conversion), decline — the built-in exchange rate is poor.
- Use a no-foreign-fee card or multi-currency wallet for the best rates, and carry some ringgit cash for hawkers and parking.
- Data: for a half-day trip your SG plan's roaming may be fine, but for full days or frequent trips a Malaysia eSIM is cheap — see our travel eSIM guide.
- Book attractions online in advance rather than paying gate prices — check current JB attraction prices on Klook.
- Planning more escapes? JB is one of several quick getaways — compare it against Bintan and Batam in our day trips from Singapore guide.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a passport to go to JB from Singapore?
Yes. JB is in Malaysia, so you clear Singapore exit immigration and Malaysian entry immigration at the Causeway (Woodlands) or Second Link (Tuas). Singapore passport holders do not need a visa for short social visits to Malaysia. Check that your passport has at least 6 months' validity. Travellers should also check Malaysia's current entry requirements (such as the MDAC digital arrival card requirement for foreigners) before crossing.
What is the best way to get to JB without a car?
The two main public options are cross-border buses (such as Causeway Link and SBS/SMRT cross-border services from Woodlands, Kranji and Jurong East) and the KTM Shuttle Tebrau train from Woodlands Train Checkpoint to JB Sentral, which crosses in about five minutes but should be booked ahead on busy days. The Johor Bahru–Singapore RTS Link rail line is under construction and targeted to open around end-2026/early 2027, which will add a high-capacity option between Woodlands North and Bukit Chagar.
Is it cheaper to shop and eat in JB than Singapore?
Generally yes, thanks to the exchange rate — meals, groceries, massages, haircuts and petrol (for Malaysia-registered cars) typically cost noticeably less than in Singapore. Exact savings depend on the current SGD/MYR rate and where you go. Note that Singapore-registered cars must not pump RON95 subsidised petrol in Malaysia, and there are rules on minimum fuel in your tank when leaving Singapore by car (three-quarter tank rule).
Can I use Grab and pay by card in JB?
Yes. Grab operates throughout JB and is the easiest way to get around once you're across. Major malls and chain restaurants accept credit cards and e-wallets (Touch 'n Go eWallet is widely used), but keep some ringgit cash for hawker food, smaller shops and street parking. Use a card with no foreign transaction fees where possible, and always choose to pay in MYR, never SGD, when a terminal offers currency conversion.
When is the best time to cross the Causeway?
Weekday mornings after the work-commute rush are quietest. The worst jams are Friday evenings, weekend mornings (Singapore-to-JB), Sunday evenings (JB-to-Singapore), and Malaysian and Singapore public holidays and school holidays. Check the checkpoint traffic cameras or crowdsourced apps before you leave, and be prepared for one to two hours each way at peak times.
