Singapore, 30 October 2020 — Korea’s beloved emoticon characters of messaging app KakaoTalk land in Singapore’s favourite convenience store 7-Eleven! Featured in eye-catching water bottles previously, the quirky Kakao Friends come in the form of ceramic plates perfect for kidults this time.

 

The vividly-coloured plates sure to jazz up mealtime come in six designs – five of which feature each of the five iconic characters of Kakao Friends, Ryan the mane-less lion, Neo the fashionista cat, Muzi the pseudo-bunny, Apeach the sentient peach, and Tube the timid duck. The sixth design is a playfully bright yellow plate with them altogether.

 

 

Besides serving as emoticons that lighten the mood and help digital natives better express themselves over text on KakaoTalk, there is more than meets the eye that makes these characters a huge hit in and beyond Korea. In the hope of sending an uplifting message in memorable ways, the creator of Kakao Friends rejected conventional and perfect mascots, and instead sought to create characters with highly relatable insecurities and idiosyncrasies of their own. Indeed, because their “flaws” are so universal, Kakao Friends have gained a massive following since they were introduced in 2012 and transcended the original format of emoticons to become full-fledged characters, each with a narrative.

 

How to Redeem

For every $5 spent, 7-Eleven shoppers earn a stamp that can be used to eventually redeem a randomly packed ceramic plate. The plate can be redeemed for free with 20 stamps. Otherwise, with five stamps, top up just $7.90 to qualify for redemption. The six designs will make for a super colourful table setting. With luck, you can complete the vibrant set for the young and young at heart!

 

Each customer will receive a pack that is randomly selected and customers will not be able to exchange for a different design.

 

7-Eleven’s wide and affordable ready-to-eat range, from tasty and convenient onigiri, sweet treats, to noodle or rice offerings that constitute a full meal, is one easy way to be well-fed and collect the stamps at the same time! Stamps will be issued for eight weeks through 22 December, while redemption is available through 29 December.

 

Transactions involving items such as cigarettes, parking coupons, bill payments and top-up services, lottery sales, pre-orders, food delivery app orders, and figurine redemptions with a cash top-up do not qualify for stamp collection.
